What’s more important in a work of visual art: its content or the skill with which it was created? It’s a question that artists and art lovers alike ponder. It was also a key consideration for the jurors of The PRINT Show, the 5th annual juried exhibition of original prints. Print makers have a wide selection of methods and genres developed over the last seven centuries to produce their art. Some printmaking involves a series of complex, exacting steps that, when done well, can impress with their procedural virtuosity. For jurors Vicki Cowan, a Toronto artist and instructor who won First Prize in last year’s Print Show, and Cybèle Young, a Toronto sculptor and printmaker who exhibits internationally, the question then becomes what does great technical skill achieve if a work’s artistic vision is somehow lacking? On the other hand, they note, wonderful content can be undermined by inexpert or sloppy technique.

In assessing the 120 artworks that 70 artists submitted to The PRINT Show for consideration, Cowan and Young ultimately looked for a balance where the chosen technique harmoniously served the content’s purposes. Using that criterion, they selected 32 original, limited-edition prints for the exhibition, which will run until July 25. The jurors also named three winners to whom the Aird awarded cash prizes. They are: First Prize Artist - Joel Fullerton of Tottenham, Ont. Artwork - “Nigredo Shadowgraph” black-and-white lithograph: Remarks - “a sustained vision within a very technically challenging piece.” Second Prize Artist - Susan Cunningham, Toronto Art work - “Making Waves” silkscreen and acrylic painting on wood veneer: Remarks “beautifully integrates concept, material and frame.” Third Prize Artist - Shawn Reynar, Toronto Artwork - “Once Agricola Street Houses.” 24-colour stone lithograph, Chine collé and embossment on Somerset Satin paper: Remarks - “an evocative combination of artistic vision and technique; the more you look at it, the more you see.” The jurors also awarded two gift certificates redeemable for artists’ supplies. The Japanese Paper Place Prize went to Susan Fothergill for her silkscreen on washi print “Baby Dress and Rabbits.” Tracy Buchanan received the Curry’s Art Supplies Prize for her woodcut print “Walking.” Both artists are from Toronto.
